Installing Linux Open SUSE on Compaq Presario V3000
I did bump into some issues though. The biggest one was the nvidia support for my display. Okay, so this is what i did.
Installation Guide
1. Insert CD and boot from CD.
2. Choose the regular installation at the menu, then type:
noapic irqpoll nosmp
for the option the bottom of your screen. Hit Enter.
3. The graphical installer is straight forward and self-explanatory. Explore and accept default values. From my experience using Linux Suse, setting up and use a regular ethernet wired connection during the install process is vital to the installation to make your life easier.
4. After the installation finished, go to YaST (Administrator Settings) - System - Boot Loader. Click “Edit” on the first item. Add "noapic irqpoll nosmp” in the Options line if they are not there.
5. While still in YaST, click on Sofware - Community Repositories. Tick / Check the main repositories, nVidia (if your display have NVIDIA chipset) and other repositories you needed and click Finish. After that, click on “Software Repositories” in YaST again to make sure that all the repositories you selected are enabled and disabled “openSUSE-10.3-OSS-KDE 10.3″, which is the CD or DVD.
6. Still in YaST, click "Software Management”,search “nvidia” and choose “nvidia-gfxG01-kmp-default” and “x11-video-nvidiaG01″ to install. Click Accept.
Optional : you might want to install “ndiswrapper” for your broadcom wireless support.
If you need to use Windows driver for your broadcom wireless , then open your browser and Google for your hardware driver and download the driver file. Unzipand type these:
su -
(enter your root password)
cd /home/user/directory/where/you/unzipped/the/file/
cd DRIVER/
ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf
ndiswrapper -m
echo blacklist bcm43xx >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
echo ndiswrapper >> /etc/modules
reboot
Reboot, you should see the nVidia logo flash across the screen before you log in. Click KNetworkManager icon in the system tray and see your wireless networks.
NVidia Troubleshooting:
If you didn’t see the nVidia logo before you logged in, edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf as root and find the word ‘nv’ and change it to ‘nvidia’ and reboot again. Graphic card issues are now settled. Now I am having problem with my sound card.
That's it! Good Luck!BM Version below :
